KFS is a human service agency that focuses on assisting larger agencies that serve at-risk youth and families. In addition to the mentoring programs, KFS has a tutoring program and also provides workshops and training to other agencies. The workshops include life skills’ development, gang intervention, time management, and personal responsibility. Our goal is to be an enhancing supportive service to existing human services agencies. Kismet Family Services forges partnerships with child welfare agencies, schools, and with community leaders, businesses, religious congregations, civic associations, and other institutions to help them make mentoring a reality for more children.
The Kismet Family Services Mentoring Program is an innovative approach to mentoring at risk youth. Growing up can be difficult for the youth of today. Being raised in a single parent and/or foster homes compounds these difficulties and can dramatically affect a youth's development. For the youth, the stress of being in such a situation in today’s society can be overwhelming. Providing vital and stabilizing services to the youth is the primary component of the Kismet Mentoring Program. Often, Kismet’s professional staff and the State’s designated lead agency worker are the sole advocates for the youth. This is especially true when more than one youth in the family receives our services. As the mentor / youth relationship grows, so does the youth's trust in our program.
The Kismet Mentoring Program operates on the idea that a positive relationship between a child and a significant adult can have a profound effect on a child's self esteem, self confidence, and relationship building skills, while instilling new hope for the future. One key component of the Kismet Mentoring Program is a comprehensive mentoring service plan. This plan includes educational and social interventions that are identified by the youth, their parents, teachers, social workers, and clinical professionals. Additionally a recreational assessment and client profile is completed by the Kismet staff.
The Kismet Family Services Tutoring Program provides educational and vocational services for at-risk students. All academic and vocational subjects, special education and resource classes are taught by teachers or qualified tutors. The Tutoring Program works with families who's children receive remediation in the subjects they are deficient in.
Tutors registered with Kismet Family Services, Inc. are assigned according to their proximity to the client and subject qualifications. Instruction for students take place on weekdays, weekends, or any day that school is not in session. It is permissible to teach students after school hours as well as during school hours as long as the school allow. Foster Agency instruction may take place any day or at any time during the day, including after school hours weekends and holidays.
Our goal is to teach students of all ages, levels and abilities how to learn information quickly, efficiently, and for the long term. Students need to become independent learners before they can succeed in their studies. Tutoring alone can make students dependent on their tutors. Students who learn how‑to‑learn for themselves become independent and self‑confident learners. Individuals who learn our system and apply our strategies to their schoolwork achieve better grades and excel academically.

The stressors of crime, drugs use and obtaining the treasures of popular culture jade today’s adolescents. It is common for many adolescents to think they will not live to see their twenty-first birthday. Many of these world-weary youths lack the positive reinforcement that gives support to and encourages them to set life advancing goals. An action plan for future development rarely exists as a precursor to significant events such as entrance into puberty, high school graduation and job obtainment. Many cultures in America practice some type of rites of passage ceremony to mark adolescents’ progress. Yet, very little planning and instruction involves the youths themselves.
A person’s self-esteem and buoyancy is enhanced when loved ones acknowledge his/her accomplishments and milestones. Many take for granted the significance of the common celebrations recognizing birthdays, graduations, career advancements and marriages. Most successful people received encouragement and motivation to do more and to be better via their positive network of family, friends and advisors. When such a network of role models and supporters isn’t available, rarely does one prosper. The KFS Rites of Passage Program documents the history and various cultural ceremonies pertaining to rites of passages. The importance of such rituals are addressed. As a result our comprehensive rites of passage program seeks to address the shortsightedness and lack of ambition of today’s urban adolescents, while providing them with a positive and supportive network.

Kismet Family Services, Inc. has won several awards and received special recognition for the effective and professional service we provide.
